It's your choice. You can complain about how quickly technology and marketing is changing OR you can be thankful for what you have. With U.S. Thanksgiving just around the corner (and Canadian Thanksgiving just behind us), I think it's important we take a moment and STOP.
Instead of complaining and whining about the problems in our business, let's be thankful we have a business. Thankful for the ability to create jobs and make money and meet the needs in our community.
I've increased the amount of hours that I am scheduling calls with clients to 5 days a week and I've noticed that there are two types of business owners: Those that complain and those that are thankful. Their situations might be identical but their perspective changes everything!
You can approach a really busy, stressful time in your company with exhaustion and whining and complaining OR you can say, "Wow! We have grown and expanded and I GET to hire more people! I get to systematize everything more and find a solution!" Perspective and attitude changes everything! Everything.
I've spoken with business owners who are miserable and choosing to SHUT THEIR EYES to what is really going on. Then others come to me with eyes wide open, saying, "Jen, we need help. We know we are here and we want to go THERE. Can you help?" I LOVE those phone calls! YES I can help! But can I help the whiners and complainers? Not really. I can be a sympathetic, listening ear, but nothing will change unless THEY choose to change.
Last week, I had a few client calls in the morning, and I decided to move a small desk upstairs to my bedroom, just for a change in scenery while I worked. And you know what? It changed everything. It changed my thought patterns, my emotions, and my perspective. Do you need to literally rearrange your office to get a new perspective? Do you need to get out of the house or office more? Do you need to hang around more upbeat, positive people? Instead of pushing through the stress and the crazy, do you need to hire more people to help you?
It's the beginning of the holiday season. You can complain that things are going to get SO crazy, or you could be thankful for what you have, what you've lived through, and the people you get to lead. It's YOUR choice.
I choose thankful. I choose blessed. This year hasn't been all easy, but when I look back, all I see is the good. Why? Because that's what I choose to do.
